I only had a small, preconceived idea about what my class “Introduction to Internet Communications” was about. I know about the internet, how to communicate, statistics, data analysis, and all that jazz, so what else is there to learn. I even know how to put a website

together with amazing content. I thought this would be one of my bird courses, meaning I would fly through it. But oh, how I was wrong. When I downloaded and launched Adobe Dreamweaver, I knew I would be challenged…and that’s ok.  Designing a website took on a whole new meaning.

The first thing I thought was, this class wants me to come in through the back door.

When you enter a place set up for you, you come in through the front door and see what has been provided or what the provider wants you to see, which is usually visually appeasing. You may be able to rearrange some things, add some elements, and make it your own, but you are working with what is given. Coming in through the back door is seeing all it takes to provide the look you get when you come in through the front.  Coming in through the back door allows you to have the experience the cords, the wires, the dirty clothes, the uncooked and overcooked food, the extras, and all the errors. The back door allows you to explore, create, do, redo, and redo again and decide what you want people to see to when they walk in the front door.

Designing a web page and website gives you creative control over what you see when you enter that digital room. You are responsible for both the aesthetics and the functional elements, meaning you will be the one determining how your website looks and feels. Hopefully, with my creativity and the tools I acquire in this class, I can build a place where people can come in through the front door and say, hey…this is nice; I like it here; let me stay a while. It is a work in progress...take a look!
